Psychotria Carthagenensis – Live Plant

We are a nursery that specializes in Psychotria propagation. We leverage this expertise to give each of our plants unique care that general nurseries cannot provide. Each plant is grown in very limited quantities in our Texas-based nursery.

Overview

Historically, Psychotria Carthagenensis has been revered by indigenous cultures throughout the Amazon basin. While often discussed alongside its famous cousin, P. viridis, Carthagenensis holds its own unique place in traditional ethnobotanical collections. It has been used for generations in traditional medicines and is respected as a plant of significant cultural and historical importance.

Growth Parameters & Care

As a tropical understory plant, it thrives under the following conditions:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. 50% shade is a sweet spot

  • Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity (60% or higher). A daily misting or a humidity tent helps during drier months.

  • Soil: Use an organic-rich, well-draining soil medium. A potting mix that contains composted pine bark works very well for this species.

  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Ensure your pot has excellent drainage.

  • Temperature: Best kept in warm environments 70-86°F (1830°C) but tolerant between 55-100°F. Protect it from frost and cold drafts.

  • Fertilization: Thrives with an organic, acid-loving plant fertilizer. Fertilize every 2-3 months during the growing season.

Note:
Our plants are grown outdoors in unsterilized soil. This ensures a wide range of biodiversity for our plants to thrive. We clean all of our plants of any visible insects before packaging for shipment; however, there is a moderate likelihood that a few insects (earthworms, isopods, ants, spiders, gnats, ect) may remain in the soil at the time of packaging. It is recommended that you quarantine your plant upon arrival if you are working in an area where this could be an issue. Only purchase if you are okay with this likelihood.
